Analysis & Testing

UMS provides a suite of testing to meet the needs of our Clients and suppliers. These services encompass all parts of production, from mould manufacture to the assessment of products in use.

Accompanying the expertise held within the castings field, many of the testing services are covered by independent quality bodies.

As a special service to demonstrate the effectiveness of UMS's production process they offer "Lunch and Learn Days" to Engineers / Designers. UMS work closely with Designers to highlight key design potentials for components and tools that will reduce valuable in-house manufacturing time.

Non-Destructive Testing

A host of Non-Destructive Testing techniques are available on components of different sizes and alloys. Surface inspection is regularly conducted using Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and Dye Penetrant inspection (DP). Sub-surface defects in sections up to around 250mm thick (Steel) are identified using X-ray and Ultrasonic Testing (UT).

Metallurgical

UMS have the ability to conduct a wide range of testing, usually as part of an investigation or assessment covering a wide variety of metals and alloys, frequently handling steel, nickel, aluminium, titanium and magnesium alloys.. This knowledge enables us to not only provide results of analysis, but diagnose the root cause of defects / failures and to prescribe effective solutions.

Defect Analysis

Defects can have a wide range of causes and consequences. UMS can rapidly identify the defect source, with recommendations given with regard to its elimination.

Failure Investigations

Failures may arise from a whole variety of reasons:

  • Material defects
  • Out of specification material
  • Incorrectly specified or unsuitable use of materials
  • Misuse/maltreatment
  • Welding procedure/defects
